handcrafted
by people

Every Aro begins with the people who make it.

Skilled craftsmen and women from the local community have been shaping, cutting, and finishing shoes in our Romanian factory for decades. Many have been there long enough to know leather better than most people know their morning coffee order. They found opportunity through shoemaking and turned it into a lifelong mastery, bringing care, patience, and quiet confidence to every pair.

You can feel it the moment you slip them on.

doing things properly

The factory itself is more than a building; it’s a space built for craft, care, and responsibility.

It’s certified to EMAS, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards, which basically means we take the environment, safety, and quality seriously without making you read a manual.

These certifications reflect how the factory runs every day, protecting the people who make the shoes, looking after the planet, and ensuring every Aro that leaves the line meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and responsibility.

the source of the materials

We believe great shoes start with great materials, and we don’t cut corners here.

Our leathers are imported from Italy—full grain, the highest grade leather there is, and a world apart from what most people know as “genuine leather.” Full grain means the leather is left in its most natural, strongest state, preserving its character, strength, and ability to age beautifully over time. We source it from trusted Italian tanneries, where it’s ethically produced as a byproduct of the food industry and backed by internationally recognised certifications, including the Leather Working Group. The result is leather that’s not only soft and breathable, but honest—built to mold to your feet and only get better with time.

Underneath, we use 100% natural rubber from Sri Lanka, shaped by nature and built to support you. Every material is chosen for how it moves, how it lasts, and how it becomes part of your everyday life, quietly doing its job without asking for attention.

vulcanisation

This is where things get a little technical, and a lot special. Our vulcanised sole process melts the rubber directly onto the shoe, bonding it permanently without stitching or glue. It becomes one piece—flexible, durable, and virtually indestructible. This means no separating soles, no flapping fronts, and no awkward moments where your shoes start talking before you do. Just Aros that bend with you, move with you, and keep showing up, day after day, exactly as they should

sustainability

Making shoes the right way also means making them responsibly. Our factory is 80% powered by solar energy, because if the sun is going to show up every day, it might as well help make your shoes. We work with thoughtfully sourced materials, including natural rubber that comes from the earth, chosen for its durability, flexibility, and lighter impact compared to synthetic alternatives. We also source our leather from a trusted tannery in Italy, where the highest grade Italian leather is ethically produced as a byproduct of the food industry and certified by the Leather Working Group—the gold standard for responsible leather. It ensures nothing goes to waste, and every Aro carries quality, integrity, and craftsmanship you can feel in every step. And instead of making more than the world needs, we produce in small, thoughtful quantities to minimise waste. Combined with our durable construction, this means your Aros stay with you longer—and the longer you keep them, the less ends up in landfill.

We believe sustainability doesn’t stop at the shoe. It follows every step after that, too. That’s why all of our packaging is made from recycled materials that break down naturally and return to the earth without overstaying their welcome. No unnecessary layers, no landfill-bound extras. Just thoughtful packaging that does its job, protects your Aros on the way to you, and then quietly disappears once you’re done with it. No drama, no long goodbyes.

We also take the scenic route when it comes to shipping. Aros don’t travel by plane, as we only ship within Europe by land, because reducing carbon emissions matters more to us than arriving in a hurry. They move by slower, lower-impact methods, which feels appropriate for shoes that were never made to be rushed in the first place.

And we’re not standing still. We’re constantly exploring new materials, better processes, and smarter ways to reduce our footprint. Sustainability isn’t a finished box we’ve ticked—it’s an ongoing practice, one we’re committed to improving step by step. After all, if you’re going to make something that walks into the future, it should help protect it too. At Aro, making shoes the right way means making them responsibly, thoughtfully, and built to last.
