Hot Stuff: Let’s Talk Vulcanisation
Okay, vulcanisation sounds like something from a science textbook. And fair enough—it kind of is.
But it’s also one of the things that makes an Aro shoe an Aro shoe.
It starts with the rubber. We use natural rubber sourced from Sri Lanka, chosen for its quality, flexibility, and durability. From there, vulcanisation is the process where that rubber sole is fused directly to the upper using high heat. Not glued. Not stitched and hoped for the best. Melted together. Bonded for life. (Romantic, no?)
The result? A shoe that’s flexible, durable, and built to move. The sole becomes one with the upper, creating a seamless structure that can bend, twist, and keep up with your day—without falling apart halfway through it.
It’s old-school craftsmanship, but it still works because it works. The technique has been around for decades, and we use it because it creates a stronger, longer-lasting shoe. Less separation. Less waste. More miles.
And here’s the part we love: vulcanised soles don’t just last — they feel different. Softer underfoot. More natural. More connected to the ground. You’re not stomping through life. You’re moving with it.
It’s a slower process. It takes intention. It takes precision. But that’s kind of our thing.
Because if your shoes are going to carry you everywhere — they should probably be held together by more than just glue.
That’s vulcanisation.
